Breandán Mac Suibhne’s “The End of Outrage” recognized by the American Conference on Irish Studies

Centenary University Professor of History Breandán Mac Suibhne’s book, The End of Outrage: Post-Famine Adjustment in Rural Ireland (Oxford University Press, 2017), has won the coveted James S. Donnelly Sr. Award for Books on History and the Social Sciences, presented annually by the American Conference for Irish Studies. Mac Suibhne has taught at Centenary University since 2010.

The book was previously named the Irish Nonfiction Book of the Year by The Irish Times. It tells the story of an informer who betrays the Molly Maguires, a secret society that protected the rural poor, in the wake of Ireland’s Great Famine. Reviewers have described The End of Outrage, which concerns the author’s own forebears, as “a masterclass in assessing an extraordinary range of historical sources” and “a work of courage, of integrity and of love. … set to become a classic of Irish historiography.’

Amy D’Olivo, chief academic officer at Centenary University, said, “The international success of Professor Mac Suibhne’s book speaks to the quality of scholar-teachers at Centenary University. Students coming to our campus in northern New Jersey find themselves in small classes taught by leaders in their fields. Our professors pride themselves on giving each and every student their complete attention.”
